Why we love this coffee?
We were looking for something different. Sumatran coffees are known for deep, rich and earthy flavors that hold up well as a dark roast, and therefore are commonly used for espresso or to mask cheap coffee. However, a nicely produced and roasted Indonesian coffee can produce a unique, rich and eclectic cup; Reje Gayo does not disappoint.
As always, this coffee meets our values. It’s Fairtrade and Organic certified, and as noted by our importer, KSU Item Reje Gayo co-op is continuing to progress their operation’s sustainability and social contribution. In addition to researching new, organic fertilizers and pesticides, they use various other crops such as avocado and banana trees, orange and guava and cinnamon to shade the coffee shrubs and monetize on exports. Lastly, they are part of Cafe Imports “Women Producers” initiative that pays a premium to the women who are a part of the co-op. This initiative helps inclusivity and diversity in our supply chain.
Many Sumatran coffee shareholders use small land plots, and therefore contribute their coffee to the co-op to create larger lots. This also adds an extra layer of complexity to the cup. While we love small coffee lots and single farms, we love the impact that co-ops have on a community. The outreach is ultimately more widespread, and requires less equipment and infrastructure.
We are proud to serve you this coffee, and we are excited to share it with you.
This coffee is serves amazingly as both drip and espresso!
